Clipso Young Superstar Awards 2011
by
Clipso Salons
on Tue 01 Nov 2011 05:06 PM GMT
Education is an area that the Clipso group directors take very seriously and it’s the younger generation of upcoming talented hairdressers who are recognised as the continued future success of the Clipso group. Each year, the Clipso Young Superstars awards put Clipso and Addiction salon assistants and trainees against one another.
The competition was compared by Kim Rance and Emilie Pearson Brown, both Artistic Consultants at Clipso Watford. The audience and judges were kept fascinated with the extraordinary talents of Clipso trainees from first to third year level each presenting a ‘complete look’ model, with the second and third years each giving a two minute presentation to explain their concept, technique and over all look, including use of mood boards.
The judging panel for the 2011 competition was award winning salon owner and International Creative Directorfor Electricsalons Mark Woolley, award winning Jo O’Neill, International Technical Education Director for Toni & Guy, colour expert Carolyn Newman, Colour Director atCharles Worthington and the award winning Alison Dace, Creative Director at SAKS.
Each winner and runner up was presented with a certificate, Selfridges voucher, and goody bags from GHD and L’Oreal Professionnel.
The winners included:
First Year winner – Hayley Hanson, Clipso Hemel Hempstead
First Year runner up – Sam Ashcroft, Clipso Watford
Second Year winner – Abbie Gill, Clipso Hemel Hempstead
Second Year runner up – Rebecca Hill, Clipso Watford
Third Year winner – Shelby Burton, Addiction Watford
Third Year runner up – Reagan Daniels, Clipso London

The Young Superstar Overall Award was presented to Shelby Burton from Addiction Watford by guest judge Mark Woolley and the prize included a trip to Madrid for the L’Oreal Exposure tour.
A special prize was also donated by hairdresser Jamie Stevens, which was to spend the day with him, and was presented to Jack Williams from Clipso Watford in recognition for his enthusiasm and energy in the 1st Year category.
Russell McGrath, Operations Director at Clipso, commented, “This annual competition has been a huge success as always and it’s so essential to have it each year, especially so as it was the first awards event without Clipso creator, Terry Calvert. We were all so proud to see Terry’s legacy continuing through our younger team members and their dedication to the future of hairdressing and the Clipso group coming stronger than ever. I want to say a big thank you to everyone who helped with this event and a special thank you to our judges, they were fantastic. Each salon director is really pushing their salon team forward and the future is looking exciting for Clipso.”

Clipso Stylists Shine at Salon International 2011
by
Clipso Salons
on Thu 20 Oct 2011 10:14 AM BST
Over the weekend of Salon International, Clipso stylists from across the six salons were in full attendance and leading the way for the salon group. Over the weekend of the 15th-17th of October, stylists from the Clipso salon group were on different stands working with hair manufacturers, involved in stage work, presenting in shows, and even finalists in The Fellowship Club Star competition.
Kim Rance, Harriette Calvert and Emilie Pearson Brown, all from Clipso Watford, spent the whole weekend assisting on stands. Kim spent her three days working on the popular Awesome Feather Hair Extension stand, which involved promoting the new ‘big hair’ trend, not to mention applying hundreds of feather hair extensions over the three day period. Harriette Calvert worked on the Babyliss Pro stage and demonstrated how to get the best out of styling tools, as well as creating gorgeous looks on models and presenting on stage. Emile Pearson Brown was assisting on the Moroccan Oil stand and demonstrated how to use the products as well as answering questions and giving advice.
Jack Lawrence and Freya Haines from Clipso London and Kim Rance from Clipso Watford kicked off Saturday morning on the Hairdressers Journal stage. They had a 40 minute slot to demonstrate their hair styling and compering skills in front of a large audience. On the Sunday, the stylists were busy on The Fellowship stage. Serafina Woodward from Clipso Hemel Hempstead started the day by showing off her two stunning models in the Fellowship Shooting Stars show, before Emilie Pearson Brown took to the stage with the Fellowship Project X team, where she talked through the look she had created with her model. Finally Kim Rance demonstrated her long haired model in the Fellowship Long Hair show later on in the day.
On the final day of Salon International, Serafina Woodward was back on stage but this time on the Hairdressers Journal stage presenting with the NHF Inspire team. In the afternoon Georgina Calvert and Anna Usher from Clipso Watford were both finalists in the Fellowship Clubstar competition. Lindsay Calvert awarded the prizes to the three winners as a tribute to her late husband, Terry Calvert, where the award had been renamed in remembrance of him.

Clipso Stylists at LFW
by
Clipso Salons
on Mon 19 Sep 2011 03:34 PM BST
The Clipso team have been very busy over the weekend styling hair for various LFW Shows, including Bernard Chandran and Henry Holland.
Artistic Consultant Kim Rance and Harriet Calvert at Clipso Watford styled the hair for Henry Hollands LFW Show with Adam Reed and Babybliss Pro.
"I've always loved working with Adam, no matter how much pressure he is under he always finds time to educate you and make you feel part of the team. This was the 2nd time I've done fashion week with Adam and Babybliss Pro. Not only was I excited to work with them again but for the Henry Holland show as I've always been so interested in his clothes. I couldn't wait to see what the models were going to be wearing and I was not disappointed. There were cool school like shirt dresses with a retro edge, snake skin collars and gold padlocked belts - I wish I could have worn them myself. To match these cute outfits were beret clips that Adam had spray painted to a rose gold colour to match the heel of the shoes. They were placed at the crown and at the nape of the neck to give a slick glossy young two pony tail look. We used Babybliss Pro irons to smooth out any kinks or curls, we did this quickly as the irons heated and we glided them through the hair. The whole experience was brilliant and it was so amazing to do the hair for Henry Holland!" explains Kim Rance.

by
Clipso Salons
on Mon 23 May 2011 04:04 PM BST
Clipso St Albans owner Simon Cox has teamed up with award winning Scottish hairdresser Charlie Miller and the Teenage Cancer Trust to style wigs for young female cancer sufferers.
Charlie Miller recently visited the St Albans salon, where he spent the day demonstrating how wigs can be altered and styled to give young patients a natural looking style. The salon now provides a complimentary wig cutting service for 13-24 year old cancer patients which will run along side the adult service which the salon already provides.
“It was great to have Charlie visit the salon and present a wig cutting demonstration; he’s fantastic to work with. I think it’s great that we can offer this free service at the salon, the thought of losing your hair is tough enough to deal with at any age but especially when you’re a teenage girl. I’m so pleased that I can offer this service to young people suffering from this terrible illness,” say owner Simon Cox.

Darren Fowler and his salon teamwere celebrating this week as he was announced Manager of the Year winner, sponsored by L’Oreal Professionnel Inoa, at this year’s exclusive British Hairdressing Business Awards held at the Lancaster London Hotel in London.
The evening was presented by trade magazine, Hairdressers Journal International and the awards ceremony was hosted by TV personality and host of I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here UK coverage, Mark Durden-Smith. The British Hairdressing Business Awards are in their 12th year and were launched to specifically recognise and celebrate the commercial success and professionalism of the hairdressing industry. There are thirteen categories within the awards, rewarding the entrepreneurial expertise of hairdressers from dynamic junior hairdressers to inspirational and motivational managers and directors, together with salons that are forward thinking and industry leaders.
To enter the awards, salons or individuals have to fulfil the criteria set down and present this in a dossier, which is judged by a team of industry experts along with the sponsors of the various categories. From these impartial judging sessions, six or seven finalists are chosen and the dossiers are then judged by an independent panel of judges.
Darren Fowler commented, “It’s great to be recognised by your peers for your managerial success but it’s also about having a strong team helping me to create a successful business. It’s one of the highest accolades you can achieve in the industry and this award will compliment past awards such as Salon of the Year and Junior of the Year.”

Clipso’s annual Go-Karting Challenge Cup to raise funds for HABB took place on Sunday 1st August and was a very successful and fun event bringing their fundraising almost £2,500 to date.
Into its third year, Clipso was once again mixing charity with fun with each participant donating £30 to HABB. Nineteen teams from salons, manufacturers, distributors and educational companies took part, eager to race it out on the track for the highly coveted winning spot.
Following a safety briefing and a talk highlighting the plight of HABB, each team took turns in having a few practice laps, and also secured qualifying times. Luckily the weather held out and the event took place under blue skies and sunshine. There were lots of supporters watching track-side and a keen eye was kept by everyone on the leader board.
After a tense 1½ hours racing round the track the top 3 teams were announced and all received trophies.

I want to thank everyone that attended; it’s not only about having fun and enjoying ourselves but raising money for HABB. Clipso Watford Sponsor Swimsuits for Charity Swimming Challenge
by
Clipso Salons
on Mon 21 Jun 2010 02:40 PM BST
The Clipso salon in Watford is showing their community spirit by sponsoring a team of female swimmers as they train for a challenging feat to swim a two way crossing of the English Channel departing from Dover in July, a total of 22 miles.
This task is all in aid of two charities close to the hearts of two of the girls taking part. Kirsty, Rebecca, Mandy, Rebecca, Hannah, Carolyn and Tillie are all raising money for Malaria No More UK (a new charity set up to help prevent and support Malaria sufferers, saving hundreds of lives each year) and The Hope Foundation a charity which supports street children in Calcutta, India.
All six competitors and Carolyn (Reserve) have undergone a gruelling training programme including a 2 hour non-stop qualifying swim off the coast of Dover. The team have also been preparing themselves for the cold temperatures in the sea, by bathing themselves in ice!
The team have achieved tremendous support locally, alongside Clipso’s swimsuit donation; companies such as Zoggs, Europa Quality Print and Cherry Active have been involved too. The charity campaign has also seen the team receive a 'shout out' on Radio One recently.
“We heard about this great fundraising event as one of the team has been visiting Clipso with her parents since she was a child and we’re always keen to show our support locally. We wish them the best of luck next month,” explains Russell McGrath, Clipso salon manager.

by

on Wed 02 Jun 2010 10:54 AM BST
New Fellowship President and Creative Director of the multiple-award winning Clipso group, Terry Calvert was honoured by a standing ovation at his recent Fellowship Power Night.
Compered by past-President, Sean Dawson, the hundred strong crowd looked like a ‘who’s who’ of hairdressing with the likes of Richard & Hellen Ward, Andrew and Liz Collinge, Tony Rizzo, Daniel and Joshua Galvin, Gary France, and Akin Kinozi all supporting and encouraging Terry.
The evening saw Terry reminisce his past 30+ years in the hairdressing industry from a 16 year old skin head experimenting with perm and colour chemicals in the staff room to styling models, bands and actress’ hair as a leading session stylist, to his tribulations in the 80’s recession and of course, his huge success in running the renowned Clipso group that first opened in 1978.
The evening was supported by a montage of film footage showing Terry’s creative expertise and broken down into the decades from the 70’s to Naughties. The audience were taken back in time with Terry as he regaled the audience with his humours anecdotes juxtaposed with his exceptional hairdressing and business skills and creative eye – having first discover and styled the likes of Brit favourites Melanie Sykes, Tess Daley, and Fraser’s leading lady ?,.
Accompany each filmed decade Terry presented homage to the decade which saw stunning catwalk models prepared by Terry and his artistic team. With stunning couture designs and cheeky choreography that saw the models join Terry on his ‘casting couch’ – the audience were given a modern day twist on Terry’s original styling from each decade.
The 70’s saw Bowie’esque strong power cuts, 80’s was the golden age where everyone wanted colour, cuts and perms and Terry and Clipso started to really make their mark within the award circuit, the 90’s was the icon era with wealth, sexuality and Clipso’s award success continued in force, and ending in the 00’s with an avant-garde take of styling more associated with the modern day stars such as Lady Gaga.
With a questions and answers session from the audience to complete the evening, Terry concluded his journey, with an overview, “I’ve always seen hairdressing as fun but with always with that professional element. I have high standards and know how to get the best out of people without being horrible about it. To have longevity in our industry you shouldn’t get in a rut, keep adapting and push your boundaries – be progressive and excel in all areas. I’m a versatile hairdresser and can be as experimental with my cuts, colour, curls, hair ups and the end result needs me to be. It’s also about sharing your knowledge and pushing forward on our creativity – it’s not political but creative. Becoming the new Fellowship President will enable me to share my values and encourage the next generation – the Clubstar members. Hairdressing and the Fellowship is about excitement, fun, professional and the art of hairdressing.”

Clipso: Kim Rance, FAME Team reports on a day with Angelo Seminaro

This was such an exciting day, I LOVE Angelo. I have watched his work before and find him brilliant, he’s so cool and calm. The first time I got to meet him was at Central Saint Martins fashion show, I was doing the hair backstage he was judging the show and came backstage to give us all support. The next time I saw him was last year at L’Oreal’s Barcelona Exposure Tour - so to work side by side with him this time, was a real opportunity. Angelo put on a seminar for us with Trevor Sorbie assisting him (!) - It was fabulous and really got us all excited about learning from him.
Angelo taught us a technique that he had used recently at a show, it was very intricate almost alien like, a twisting technique with a soft gel down each side of the head-extremely hard to do! I spent hours going over it, trying to master the technique and eventually I got there but still not as perfect as Angelo’s! We then moved onto mastering the perfect pony tail - it’s not as easy as it sounds but it was great to be shown this so closely by Angelo.
Then our day with Angelo was over. What a fantastic day, he was everything I expected. He is the same person off stage as he is on stage, down to earth, genuine, calm and cool. He gave up being in Paris doing hair for German Vogue to be with us. This man certainly keeps his word!
Thank you Angelo!

Clipso: Kim Rance reports on the FAME Team
by

I’ve been given the amazing opportunity to be a member of the industries’ infamous FAME Team for 2010 – four of us (me, Ben, Olive and Ross) are selected from 100’s of other young, up and coming stylists to be mentored for a year by Errol Douglas and Bruno Marc. Past members have included well known hairdressers like Errol Douglas, Paul Merritt, Antoinette Beenders,Lisa Shepherd, Zoe Irwin, Adam Reed and many, many more – so I’m following in some impressive footsteps! In my blog I’m going to keep you up to date on the many exciting activities we’re going to be up to…so here’s my first one:
We just did our first ever show for Clubstar at Wella. It was a fantastic young audience with a few mature watchful eyes – as it was our first stage show, it had to be brilliant, and it was!
We had 10 models and the concept was a 90’s grunge young street look. My inspiration came originally from Chanel’s spring summer collection and the upcoming revival of many of the 90’s bands at this year’s festivals – think Guns and Roses, Green Day, Blink 182 and Take That.
Men’s hairstyling was massive in the 90’s so we wanted to include that in the show – we used bands like Blur and Oasis for the bowl type cut and also more edgier Kurt Cobain and River Phoenix long haired cut that were more grown out, shaggy styles.
For the girls we went all out long hair – buns, out of bed looks, undone quiffs etc. It’s a great opportunity to show the audience my own style – I went for crimping, perms mixed with tight plaiting and under cutting the shape for a modern twist. For the cutting looks we worked a lot of short hair, mixing up a lot of androgynous flat not to over styled crops.
The show was a massive test for us all but we nailed it. What’s next?

We had the great pleasure of linking with John Lewis and the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre and officially launching our new 'Ready to Wear' wig cutting service at an evening recognising breast cancer.
Over sixty women came along on the night to be treated to a evening of advice by John Lewis lingerie experts, Clipso stylists Jodie Alexander and Emily Pearson and nurses and hospice workers from Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre.
With friends and family attending - the evening ended in a glamorous fashion show where everyone supported and cheered the women on the catwalk.
Our Ready to Wear wig cutting treatment is a new complimentary service for customers under going chemotherapy. We're here to offer hair advice to you and then cut & style your wig, free of charge. It's hard enough going through the treatment without worrying about wearing a bad looking wig, so this is our way of helping you look great regardless of how you may feel.
Call us for a chat and feel to let your family, friends and colleagues know about this free service too.
